What do you do when you stop believing that everything will be ok? When you’ve reached that point where you don’t feel like there is any fight left and all you want to do is give up?
Let’s face it; there comes a time in everyone’s life where they feel completely defeated. So how do you overcome that? Recently, I wrote on the chaos that people can experience as well as how to get motivated, but every once in awhile, all fails and you lose complete faith in everything.
Speaking from experience, most recently, it hit me that I was about to take on a lot. Between rent and utilities, graduation, finding a “real” job, relationships, and moving into a new place, I lost all trust that everything was going to be ok. I was beyond overwhelmed. On paper (or webpage) it all sounds so straightforward and easy to tackle, but I truly had reached a point of defeat.
Upon reaching this point, I knew I had to find a way to conquer it. I drew on past experiences. This is not the first time this has happened and I have always found a way through. That being said, here is what I did:
- I took A FEW breaths.
Often times when this happens, I can actually feel my blood pressure rising. I have to force myself (or even with a friend) to take a few deep breaths. This allows me to realign my thoughts. I will admit, usually at this point, I still believe the world is crashing down, but I at least become in control of my blood pressure again and that’s somewhere to start.
- I visualized what getting through this looked like.
I do simply as I stated. I have to visualize what “the other side” of this looks like. This also forces me to think about prior times when this has happened and how I got through them.
- I recognized that tomorrow is a new day.
This situation cannot last forever and it is important to understand that.
It’s hard to gather yourself when you feel like the whole world is crashing down on you, but hopefully the above tips have helped. You have to believe that you will get through it – even when you don’t feel like you will. Remember: 1) Breathe. 2) Visualize the other side. 3) Know that tomorrow is a new day!
