An idea not coupled with action will never get any bigger than the brain cell it occupied.” – Arnold Glasow
We don’t realize how critical “taking action” is to achieving our goals. That sounds like a silly statement, but it’s true. How many times have you said, “I want to do this.” Or, “Guess what I’m going to do?!” … but, never took action to go after what you wanted or do what you say you’re going to do. The action does not have to be a huge, life changing move, but it has to be a step – even a baby step like writing it down – that will keep you moving forward.
When you get that spark of inspiration and that inspiration soon develops into a goal you want to achieve, here are three moves you can make to ensure you’re taking action toward that new goal:
- Tell someone! Once you verbalize your goal, the cat’s out of the bag! You have someone holding you accountable – a person who will often follow up with you asking, “Hey, have you written your first chapter yet?” … “Did you enroll in your Master classes?” … “How has your blog been coming along?”
- Find a mentor. When you first commit to your goal, it’s scary. The most difficult and discouraging points in your journey are when you start out and when you encounter your first huge challenge. You may begin to question why you even chose to set your goal and if you’re really cut out for it. By having a mentor beginning at ground zero, you are providing yourself a cushion – someone to fall back on when the going gets tough and let you know, “Hey, I’ve been there and look at me now! You got this!”
- Create a temporary action plan. By laying out the first couple steps for yourself, you’re committing to taking further action. Action = progress. I want to emphasize the “temporary” part because you have to realize your plan will change along the way. This does not mean your goal has to change, but understand that as you encounter different parts of your journey, it will require you to adapt and adjust your sails. Accepting that your plan is not permanent is one of the first steps toward achieving success.
I’m so proud of you for deciding to work toward something. In life, having something to work toward is what makes us feel alive… it gives us purpose! Know that I am always here for you and I BELIEVE IN YOU. Now, let’s make it happen!
